Don’t you just love seeing a rainbow. After the rain, when the sun comes out, there in the sky is this glorious, colourful curve. As if its saying; “so things haven’t been so good but now, everything is going to get better”. I feel such optimism when I see a rainbow. And even more so when I see a double one.

I decided to create a rainbow. However, because it delicate and ethereal in the sky, I didn’t just want to place the colours around a clear piece of glass, I felt that the piece should have the same quality as a rainbow. First of all a cut a small centre circle in clear, and then clear ‘stems’. These were placed a little over the circle, to give the piece strength. I then cut the colours of the rainbow, carefully measuring each piece. Starting with the outer colour; red. The penultimate colour; indigo, I cut slightly larger, so that it went over the clear base circle. Again, to give it strength. The final colour; violet I cut into another circle and placed over the base and the two layers of each stem. As with any piece, even if I have created something similar, I still never know exactly how it is going to come out. I have the idea in my head but am never sure if the completed piece will match the idea. When I fused this piece, I was very pleased with the outcome but was then absolutely terrified when I slumped it, in case the shape came out wrong. It didn’t, and it’s beautiful. So delicate looking, yet so strong and, with light shining on it there is your double rainbow. I love it.

In fact, to be honest, I love almost everything I create. If there is something I am not happy with, then I just keep working on it until that pride and love is there.
